Sebastian Studnitzky
Sebastian Studnitzky has always been a traveler between jazz, classical, and electronic music. In his inimitable music, not a single note is superfluous. It is detailed, minimalist, and transparent—with an emotional depth that is unique and personal. Too edgy for pop, too emotional for jazz, too opulent for electronics, and with a rhythmic groove that is far removed from avant-garde, STUDNITZKY has created something refreshingly new. His elegant musical genre-bending is style-defining and has won him multiple awards, including the ECHO Jazz and OPUS Klassik.
He writes for classical orchestras and teaches as a professor at universities in Berlin and Dresden. Solo, in bands, orchestras – everything is represented. Trumpet, piano, or drum machine – why not all at once? He calls the world’s largest and most renowned stages his home, both in clubs and at festivals worldwide, and has collaborated with names such as Nils Landgren’s Funk Unit, Jazzanova, Mezzoforte, Nightmares On Wax, Moritz von Oswald, Emiliana Torrini, and Dominic Miller. In doing so, he has developed his very own sound: it’s jazz—and it’s much more.
In 2014, STUDNITZKY founded XJAZZ! Festival Berlin, which was awarded the German Jazz Prize as “Festival of the Year” in 2022.
His enormous stylistic range is also evidenced by the more than 150 CD productions he has recorded in his career to date. His latest album, “Memento Odesa,” with the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra, was released in November 2024.
